ARLA’s response to the Scottish Government’s latest consultation

Although we welcomed the Scottish Government’s consultation on the Housing Bill we feel that aims can only be achieved by taking holistic and bold measures.

At the moment the system of allocating responsibilities for landlord registration to individual local authorities does not effectively or consistently protect consumers, and it has led to an unacceptable service for landlords from some local authorities which may damage the initiative.

In our view, some of the current issues relating to the registration of landlords highlight the need for the regulation and/or registration of lettings agents. Equally if light touch regulation is developed for lettings agents it should also be applied to sales agents, and to indeed to all property professionals.
