Best neighbours found in Yorkshire, study reveals

When investing in UK property, moving to a friendly neighbourhood is just one of a number of things to consider.

A new study by More Than has revealed that the best neighbours live in Yorkshire, with the worst found in Wales. It based its research on constructing a blueprint for the ideal neighbour, with these people having the ability to either enrich or irritate your home life.

The organisation surveyed over 1,000 homeowners in the UK and has found the 12 most common types of interaction that Brits typically have with those that live next door.

According to More Than, the perfect neighbour will deliver a house-warming bottle of wine to you within three-and-a-half days of moving into your new property.

They will not ask you to carry out more than two menial tasks per month, including signing for parcels or mowing a shared lawn. If items are borrowed then the perfect neighbour will return it to you within 16 days, while invitations to meals or BBQs should be received six times a year.

Other duties which make the ideal person to live next door to you include looking after your kids for an evening, not engaging in small talk for too long, and returning balls or Frisbees which gone over the garden fence.

Furthermore, they will never cut a plant or shrub which has partially grown from your garden into theirs without asking you first.

Garden disputes can often ruin a relationship between neighbours, and there have been many reports of arguments or fights caused over the chopping down of bushes or trees.

Janet Connor, managing director for More Than, said: "Apart from those who live deep in the countryside or in the grounds of a stately pile, the majority of Brits will have neighbours, and house-to-house relations within even the smallest of neighbourhoods can range from disastrous to delightful.

"Although this blueprint can't cover every single experience that influences people's opinions of their neighbours, it does illustrate what Brits all over the country deem to be the most important traits of the ideal neighbour."
